I'm currently working on a book about the last Ice Age. While doing research, I kept coming across the "world's oldest" stuff, and a lot of what I found is interesting in its own right. I'll be posting some of the best of what I've found here. Remember, though, that anything that's called the "world's oldest" today might be eclipsed tomorrow by a new discovery. That's what makes it fun.

The Oldest Spider Web
The oldest spider web that's been found so far was discovered in a chunk of amber thought to have been formed about 140 million years ago. Amateur fossil hunters Jamie and Jonathan Hiscocks found the amber on a beach at Bexhill in England. Professor Martin Brasier, a paleobiologist at Oxford University, is currently working to confirm the find, which apparently consists of a single thread. There's more information here
